San Beda,St. Benilde score big

02/09/2010

San Beda completed a mighty sweep of the men’s division in the first round while four-time champion St. Benilde accomplished a similar feat in the women’s side of the 85th NCAA table tennis tournament at the Emilio Aguinaldo College Gym.

The Kurt de Guzman-mentored Lions, out to clinch the title this season, won all their eight games including a shock 3-2 decision over the Blazers, the defending titlists in this event.

The Lady Blazers, for their part, blanked the Lionesses, 3-0, reigning two-time MVP Ayra Malabayabas highlighted with a relatively easy 11-5, 11-1, 11-6 win over Gloen Abales.

The Letran Lady Squires trail the Lady Blazers with a 4-1 (win-loss) record following an equally lopsided 3-0 triumph over the Emilio Aguinaldo Lady Generals while the Lionesses were at third spot with a 3-2 mark.

Nico Cruz delivered the deciding victory for the Lions after he rallied from a first set loss to turn back St. Benilde’s E. Flores in the last reverse singles match, 6-11, 11-8, 11-5, 13-11.

The Blazers fell to second alongside the Knights, who defeated the Mapua Cardinals and the Perpetual Help Altas on identical 3-0 results, on 6-1 cards.
