Tams beat Warriors in football
02/09/2010 Far Eastern University solidified its men’s championship bid by nipping University of the East, 1-0, to start the second round of the 72nd UAAP football on high note over the weekend at the Erenchun Field at the Ateneo campus. After both teams went scoreless in the early minutes, striker Romnick Jover blasted a goal in the 70th minute to provide FEU’s slim lead before maintaining tough defense en route to a 4-1-1 win-loss-draw log for 13 points that placed them in No. 2. University of Santo Tomas , the league’s present No. 1 with a 4-0-2 record for 14 points, avoided a first loss by forcing a scoreless draw with De La Salle University in the first game. La Salle and UE are both in the bottom of the team standings with 1-4-1 log for 4 points and 1-5-0 record for 3 points, respectively. Host Ateneo De Manila U (2-3-1 win-loss-draw for 7 points) forced a 1-1 draw against defending champion University of the Philippines (3-2-1 log for 10 points) in the last men’s game. Keith Mordeno of UP hit the first goal at 55th minute that earned the Fighting Maroons the lead, but Gregorio Cancio of Ateneo drilled in a game-tying goal in the 90th minute that forced the draw. In the women’s side at the Ocampo field, De La Salle’s Adrianne Yniguez scored an early goal at the 20th minute mark and the Lady Green Booters hang on for a 1-0 win over Ateneo De Manila in the first game. Marianne Narciso hit three goals – 41st, 58th and 76th – to lift reigning women’s champion UST to a convincing 3-0 win over luckless University of the Philippines and improve to 3-1-1 win-loss log for 10 points, which kept them at third. In the junior’s side, host Ateneo blanked UST, 7-0, and FEU routed La Salle-Zobel, 6-0, to remain tie on top with 3-0-1 logs for 10 points each.
