Cojuangco renews attack on Angping over RP team

10/23/2009

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco yesterday accused Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Harry Angping of mismanaging agency funds.

Cojuangco’s latest attack on Angping was apparently spurred by the PSC chief’s decision to tinker with the Philippine delegation to 25th Southeast Asian Games, which the PSC will finance if it stays within the limited number it determined earlier.

Cojuangco, however, also accused Angping of double standard as he allegedly included 18 sepak taktaw players into the team while sending a 30-man PSC secretariat to Laos.

Cojuangco asked Angping to justify his selection of the sepak takraw players while disapproving the trip of many others.

“We cannot allow this,” Cojuangco said during an interview with a government-run radio station. “It’s okay if he wants to reduce the number of athletes, but he should not increase the number of secretariat.”

“He wants a lean and mean contingent and yet he approved the inclusion of sepak takraw, which has 18 players. Did they really pass the criteria? I don’t see any logic in that.”

Tribune tried but Angping could not be reached for comment. He is still in Beijing, China on a business trip.

“Mas delikado if we allow this to happen. Government intervention has no place in the Olympic charter.”

In an effort to save government resources, Angping slashed the number of athletes to 153, the smallest number of delegates since the 1999 Brunei SEA Games.
