Angping dangles carrot, stick to RP athletes
10/16/2009 By Julius Manicad Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Harry Angping will start deploying a five-man monitoring team to various training sites tomorrow to give athletes a final push with only seven weeks left before the 25th Southeast Asian Games. But while there will be eyes to follow the athletes’ progress, they also stand to be pampered as aside from their P15,000 monthly allowance, they will also receive P2,500 additional cash benefit on Oct. 30, Nov. 15 and Nov. 30 while the agency provides them free meals. The Philippine Center for Sports Medicine will also be mobilized to attend to the athletes’ medical needs. “I will really take good care of these athletes. I will shower them with all the love and affection — and financial assistance — that they never experienced before,” Angping yesterday said. “These athletes are going to war, they have to be properly equipped. We have to take care of them and give them no reason to lose.” The PSC boss also announced that the PSC is willing to double the athletes’ incentives in the biennial meet. Under the athletes and coaches’ incentives act, gold medalists stand to receive P100,000, silver medalists will get P50,000 and bronze medalists will take home P25,000 from the government. “All of them are potential gold medalists,” he said. “The PSC will give them whatever they need, just come up with a good result.” Last week, Angping gathered over 300 athletes at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium for a dialog and a symbolic boodle fight where he announced that athletes would get to have as much as P50,000 monthly allowance if they will prove themselves by winning gold medals.
