SINGAPORE—Women’s basketball was the only bright spot for the Philippines after successive setbacks in shooting, table tennis, bowling, swimming and athletics on the fourth day of competitions in the 1st Asian Youth Games here.
Danica Therese Jose and Tara Shane Araneta tallied 10 points each as the Philippines subdued Sri Lanka, 28-22, to top Group D in the Fiba 3-on-3 basketball for girls and arrange a quarterfinal showdown with Group B runner-up Korea.
By claiming the scalp of Sri Lanka, the country’s lady dribblers thus swept all their assignments in the elimination round after victories over Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan by defaults.
The boys’ team of Cris Michael Tolomia, Jeron Alvin Teng, Jeoffrey Javillonar and Mario Bonleon also topped its group and will face United Arab Emirates in the quarters.
Save for these exploits, the Philippines practically had a rough day with shooter Jayson Escumbie Valdez, tanker Jose Joaquin Gonzales, kegler Collins Jose and sprinter Raine Reyes bowing out of contention in the week-long tournament for athletes 14-17 years old from 43 countries in the region.
Valdez missed the finals despite compiling scores of 97, 98, 95, 92, 94 and 90 in boys’ 10-meter air rifle qualifying while Gonzales, who advanced to the semifinals of the 100m backstroke for boys, failed to meet the qualifying standard to compete in the medal round.
