PBA scribes pick Tubid as week’s best player
03/31/2009 Barangay Ginebra’s Ronald Tubid is usually one player who can hurt the opponent in more ways than one. He proved that again last Saturday by helping the Kings to a much-needed win over Barako Bull in the PBA Fiesta Conference, in the process earning for himself the Motolite/Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week honors for the period March 23 to 30. The 6-foot-1 guard matched import Rod Nealy’s output with a career-high 29 points, leading the crowd favorites to a cruising 111-103 win over the Energy Boosters before a sellout crowd at the Panabo Cultural and Sports Center in Davao. The Iloilo native also displayed the other facets of his game by finishing with four rebounds, two steals and an assist in 36 minutes while anchoring the defense on prolific Barako Bull import Scooter McFadgon. McFadgon was limited to just 19 points, way below his six-game average of 35.3 ppg. “He gave us a lift, making big spot up shots, defending the best he can and making the right decisions,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico. The game was the league’s last before the RP Team-Australia Good will Series and the Holy Week Break, while the win was only Ginebra’s second in seven games and came after a bleak 24-day stretch in which it lost five straight games. Now it has the morale-booster to build on before its next game on April 17, when Eric Menk and Sunday Salvacion should have fully recuperated from their injuries. The absence of Menk and Salvacion, plus those of Mark Caguioa and Junthy Valenzuela helped lead to the slide, but the rest know they have to step up and hold the fort. Back to top
