Arcilla, Tierro make semis, Zoleta ousted

Johnny Arcilla and Patrick John Tierro beat their respective foes yesterday to make the semifinals of the Metro Open People’s Tennis Championship at the Rizal Tennis Center yesterday. Their seeded counterparts in women’s division were not as fortunate though.

The top-seeded Arcilla demolished eighth pick Rocky Paglalunan, 6-1, 6-2, to arrange a semifinal encounter with Jaime Solon while and No. 2 Tierro ousted seventh pick Ronald Joven, 7-6 (5), 7-5, to also advance to the next round oppossite No. 4 Ralph Kevin Barte.

Solon shocked third pick Rolando Ruel Jr., 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-6 (3) while Kevin Barte turned back No. 5 Elbert Anasta, 6-4, 7-5.

Former national champion and top seed Bambi Zoleta failed to advance in the next stage as she lost to lower rated opponent in Ma. Regina Santiago 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, with Anna Christine Patrimonio ousting a cramps-stricken second pick Michelle Pang, 7-6 (5), 6-7, 6-4.

Santiago thus advanced to the semis where she will meet either Santiago will collide Aileen Rogan who beat Trudy Gine Amoranto 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. Patrimonio will meet 5th seed Jessica Marie Agra, who defeated Marinel Rudas, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2.

“Hindi ko iniisip na underdog ako sa laban kaya nag concentrate na lang ako,” said Santiago.
