Go Army heavy favorite in Chairman’s Cup
02/22/2009 Undefeated colt Go Army sets out as the heavy favorite as he leads six other crack 3-year-olds in the running of the 2009 Philracom “Chairman’s Cup,” a high stakes lead-up race to the coveted Triple Crown championship set this afternoon at the Saddles and Clubs Leisure Park in Naic, Cavite. Fresh off an easy tune-up victory recently at the newly-opened racetrack, the multiple stakes winning chestnut colt will be gunning for victory number 12 and a chance to further strengthen his lock at this year’s prestigious triple race classic for 3-year-olds. The runaway 2-year-old champion of 2008 has so far won six major races and earnings in excess of P4.5-Million, with a victory today set to guarantee an additional P1.2-million windfall for his connections led by owner and breeder Herminio “Hermie” Esguerra. Recently honored PSA Jockey of the Year awardee Jonathan Hernandez is set to ride Go Army, a locally-bred son of Mr. Sutter out of J-Approve, for the 1,600-meter journey. Expected to put up a good challenge to Go Army are classy fillies’ Heaven Sent and Rhea’s Gold, set to be skippered by jockeys Ariel Tancioco and John Alvin Guce, respectively. Others in the hunt for the P2-million race are Empress of Austria, Virgin Liberty, Dream Supreme and Scout Ranger, Go Army’s stable mate which will run under the banner of the multi-awarded Herma Farms. “Go Army is definitely in top shape and we expect a strong performance from him,” explained trainer Clarito “Tito” Alvarez. The 2009 Philracom “Chairman’s Cup” will be staged in honor of former Philracom Chairman Augusto Benedicto L. Santos, who served from 1986 to 1990 and is considered as one of the major run up races to the P9-million Triple Crown Championship which runs over varied distances from May through July this year.
