NO RECONCILIATION IN SIGHT, YET

Key POC figures to miss PSC party

The Philippine Sports Commission’s (PSC) attempt to establish goodwill and camaraderie with officials and members of Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) seems to be in vain.

Some members of the POC executive committee yesterday claimed they would not be able to join what is dubbed as a “pre-Valentine’s Day party,” raising speculations that the POC leadership is not yet ready to talk peace with newly-appointed PSC chairman Harry Angping.

An unimpeachable source yesterday revealed POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco has yet to formally confirm his attendance while other POC executive council members; Mark Joseph, Monico Puentevella, Go Teng Kok and POC spokesman Joey Romasanta, have to attend “other more pressing commitments.”

Joseph and Romasanta left early yesterday for Singapore to grace an assembly hosted by the Olympic Council of Asia while Go claimed to have scheduled a previous meeting regarding the country’s preparation for the 2009 Southeast Asian Games.

Puentevella, the incumbent POC chairman and Bacolod representative, will be in Cebu City for a political meeting. He will send his secretary general, instead.

The luncheon affair is scheduled today at the function hall of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. in Parańaque City with no less than Angping and Pagcor chairman Efraim Genuino hosting the event.

Romasanta, however, said Cojuangco would still grace the PSC occasion despite his busy schedule. Cojuangco would also preside over the SEA Games meeting later today along with chief of mission Mario Tanchangco, Julian Camacho and Steve Hontiveros.

“Mr. Cojuangco has been informed, but his secretary told us that he has yet to make any confirmation at the moment,” a PSC official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Mr. Joseph, meanwhile, already sent his regrets. He said he will be out of the country (today) for an OCA affair on Feb. 13 and 14.”

“So far, 53 sports officials have confirmed their participation. But, interestingly, we have yet to receive any word from some members of the POC executive committee.”

Angping served as the chief campaigner of presidential brother Art Macapagal, who was narrowly beaten by Cojuangco, 21-19, in one of the closest and most controversial POC polls in local sports history.

“We’ll call it ‘United for the love of Philippine Sports,’” Angping said. “And we require all NSAs (national sports associations) to go there in red and their name tags will be in heart. It’s more of a friendly get-together among local sports officials.”

Go, meanwhile, admitted he could not make it to the PSC occasion due to a SEA Games-related meeting. He promised to send an emissary.
