SBP tests RP-Youth against 3 foreign teams
08/06/2008 As part of its preparation for the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship, the Nokia-RP Youth is seeing action along with three other powerhouse squads from Asia, in a four-day compact tournament to be held here beginning Aug. 14. BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala and executives of both Nokia and Tao Corporation — the two major backers of the RP under-18 team — hope the Nokia Manila Youth Basketball Invitational Tournament will give the undersized Filipinos an idea on the kind of competition to expect in the Asian Youth tilt slated later in Tehran, Iran from Aug. 28 to Sept. 5. Eala, Nokia head of corporation affairs Nikka Abes and Nokia Pilipinas team spokesman Val Victa formally launched the tournament yesterday in the PSA Forum at the Shakey’s UN Avenue branch. “Basically, the main objective of this is to prepare the RP Youth team for Tehran. But at the same time, this will allow basketball fans in the Philippines to see the kind of development our Youth team has attained, while giving us a chance to see what world basketball is all about as the best in Europe and the best in Asia (China) are coming over” Eala said. Crowding out the Filipinos in the Aug. 14 to 17 meet are Lithuania, China and Chinese-Taipei. Back to top
