Palace mum on Sereno’s misdeclared SALn

01/28/2012

Malacanang is mum on issues hounding Supreme Court Associate Justice Lourdes Sereno, who now faces the possibility of a similar fate to that of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

For two days, presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in his press briefings that the Palace would rather leave the issue to the members of the House of Representatives from where an impeachment complaint gets to be deliberated.

Sereno, who has been appointed to the Supreme Court by President Aquino has earlier been reported to have failed to declare P25 million of her income from being a legal consultant in the government’s arbitration case over the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (NAIA-3) in Washington and Singapore.

Sereno acted as legal consultant in defending the Arroyo administration to take over the NAIA-3 and was paid P25 million.

Sereno released her 2010 statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALn) in December last year that showed her net worth at P17.9 million. It was not clear when the alleged consultancy payments were made to her.

She is reportedly being eyed by Aquino to replace Chief Justice Renato Corona, now under trial in the Senate for allegedly failing to file and disclose his SALns in the past years, among other charges.

Earlier, minority members of the Lower House expressed intent to file impeachment charges against Sereno.

SC Chief Justice Renato Corona is currently being tried by the Senate for a similar offense.
