10/22/2009

ILAGAN, Isabela — A village chief who is the head of the Liga ng mga Barangay of a central town here survived an assassination attempt by unidentified men on him while he was homeward-bound the other day.

According to police in Naguilian town here, the armed men tried to kill Arsenio Bello, village head of Minallo, while he was on his way home after attending an activity at the town hall.

Chief Insp. Eulalio Ladignon, Naguilian police chief, said Bello, who was driving his vehicle, was making a right turn on a road near his house when unidentified men shot at his vehicle, prompting him to jump from his vehicle for cover and to fire back at them.

According to reports, this was the second attempt on Bello’s life by unidentified armed men, the first being in 2001.

Napoleon Hernandez of San Mateo town, provincial Liga chairman and ex officio member of the provincial board, said the shooting could have been politically motivated.
