Free hospitalization for ex-public school teachers eyed
02/22/2009 A lawmaker has filed a bill that seeks to look after the health of retired public school teachers by providing them with free hospitalization benefits. Bataan province Rep. Herminia Roman said her House Bill 5848 is in recognition of all retired public school teachers who have rendered a minimum of 20 years of service in government and for the critical role they played in society. “Public school teachers, being a pillar of our educational system, also deserve the same concern after their arduous stint in our public educational institutions, and more so for those who have served for more than 20 years,” Roman said. She sought the immediate approval of the proposed measure saying the sacrifices of the public school teachers and their unparalleled devotion in carrying out their duties and responsibilities as public servants should be amply rewarded and remembered even after their retirement from service. Roman expressed confidence the bill would at least ease the burden of the retired government teachers who need to cope with the ever rising cost of health care. “Most of our retired public teachers heavily rely only on their meager savings and pensions after retirement,” Roman lamented. The amount for the initial implementation of the proposed act shall be taken from the current appropriations of the Department of Health and thereafter shall be included in the annual General Appropriations Act.
