Indon priest’s killer slain in Kalinga encounter
02/12/2009 One of the suspects in the killing of an Indonesian Roman Catholic priest two years ago was slain in an encounter with police in a remote part of Kalinga province, belated reports reaching the Tribune yesterday indicated. According to Chief Insp. Tessie Sarmiento, Cordillera police information officer, the 35-year-old Wailan was killed in a firefight with police operatives after being cornered in Canao, Lubuagan, Kalinga last Feb. 8. Wailan had been identified as one of the killers of Fr. Franciskus Madhu, the Indonesian assistant parish priest who had been serving in Lubuagan town for more than a decade. He, along with Acmor and Joel Awingan, reportedly killed Madhu, a native of Flores, Indonesia, after accosting and abducting him as he was on his way to Palm Sunday Mass on April 1, 2007.
