DPWH building P869-M bridge in S. Leyte
02/12/2009 The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is speeding up the completion of the P869-million Agas-Agas Bridge project in Southern Leyte. The project involves the construction of a 350-meter three-span cantilever pre-stressed concrete box girder bridge connected to a 75-meter hollow box-type pier on a bored foundation. It also includes the rehabilitation/improvement and widening of about 1.15 kilometers of portland cement concrete road pavement, improvement of a drainage system and construction of slope-protection structures. The project will serve truckers and commuters passing through Southern Leyte using the roll-on-roll-off national road system who will soon be relieved of traffic emergency woes especially during the rainy season. DPWH Undersecretary Rafael Yabut, officer in charge of Southern Luzon Island Provinces and Visayas Region Operations, reported that the Agas-Agas Bridge project is now 64.51-percent complete. Upon the completion of this bridge project, traffic will be diverted from the existing critical road section in Agas-Agas along Mahaplag-Sogod Road. It can be recalled that in 2005, mudslides dragging huge boulders occurred due to the steep roadside slope in the area and made the road impassable for weeks. “Considering that the Mahaplag-Sogod Road is included in the Eastern Nautical Highway, this new bridge can assure round the clock accessibility as it was designed to withstand typhoon and earthquake using Japanese technology,” Yabut said. This bridge and road improvement project was jointly funded by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and Philippine government and is expected to be completed by August 2009.
