The world’s oldest ocean-going passenger ship MV Doulos will dock here on February 13 until March 2, at the Bacolod Reclamation Port 3 for a floating book fair. The book fair will open daily for general public which include books and a collection of music CDs, gift, stationery items, among others.

The 95-year-old MV Doulos which first docked here in Dec. 2006 drew a crowd of 28,000 people, most of whom are book lovers, came aboard to visit her floating book fair.

It has already visited over 100 countries in Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Australia. Since 1978, the MV Duolos has already visited over 500 ports in over 100 countries providing good educational literature and promoting unity in diversity.

Christened as the “Grand Old Lady of the Seas” by sheikhs, princes, prime ministers and presidents, it is a 130-meter and 6,818-ton ocean-going vessel operated by the non-profit charity organization GBA (Good Books for All) Ships e.V based in Germany. It carries 6,000 English titles from the USA and the UK, covering a wide range of subjects, such as education, science, sports, hobbies, cookery, the arts, management, Christian living, and a great collection of children’s books.

Built in 1914, only two years younger than the Titanic, MV Duolos is home to an international crew of 330 from 50 countries where most of them have left their families and friends to work on the ship as full-time volunteers for two years. The crew and staff raise funds to finance their expenses.

The MV Duolos serves as an ambassador of goodwill and international relations seeking “Bring Knowledge, Help and Hope to the Nations.” In areas of great need or tragedy, the MV Duolos crew partners with local groups to provide humanitarian and relief work. PNA
