Not just a people carrier

The ever popular people carrier gets even better. The Hyundai Starex first came out in the market in 1997. For 10 years it has had only a few “face lifts” until in 2007 when Hyundai came up with a totally new body and name. The new model was renamed Hyundai Grand Starex and has remained as popular as its predecessor — practically seen on the road everywhere you go. Aside from the changed look, its engine and other components have also been much improved. The model (all diesel-powered) comes in several variants — manual transmission or automatic transmission, and 10-seater or 12-seater. The CRDi/ automatic transmission/12 seater variant has several qualities that are impressive and highly satisfactory.

The Hyundai Grand Starex 2.5 liter CRDI has a D4CB Euro 4 compliant engine with VGT and 16-valve double overhead cam which delivers a maximum output of 170 ps/3800 rpm and maximum torque of 40.0 kg-m/2000-2500 rpm. Matched with an H-matic 5-speed automatic transmission, this vehicle runs fast and can even overtake more than one vehicle at a time without much effort. The Hyundai Grand Starex is so nimble even on tight turns and slipstreams, that one hardly notices its size at 5125 mm length and 1920 mm width. The ground clearance of 190 mm is enough to get through some road obstacles. Even at high speeds and despite its 3185 kg gross weight, the anti-lock brake system with EBD gives sufficient stopping power. The Hyundai Grand Starex is aptly called a people carrier. It can seat 12 persons comfortably (though not too comfortable for some seats without headrests). There is ample space for legroom as long as seats are properly positioned. The dual sliding doors enable the passengers to enter and exit the cabin easily. The center aisle inside the cabin though is a bit narrow, so passengers who are taller and wider than the average person may find it a bit tricky to go to and from the rear. With all seats occupied cargo space is limited. The air-conditioning system cools the interior fast enough — though with variants having man-made leather seats, it takes quite a while to cool especially when the vehicle has been parked under the sun. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th row passengers can enjoy the overhead monitor and DVD player to watch their favorite movies and programs. At the helm, the driver gets a panoramic view though with a bit of a blind spot below the A-pillar. The redesigned cockpit is user-friendly with all the easy-to-reach switches and the easy-to-select shift knob. It is not a surprise that the Hyundai Grand Starex has remained very popular. With its impressive and highly satisfactory performance, it has definitely become legendary.
