Abueva heads Petron art contest judges
06/18/2007 Philippine national artist Napoleon Abueva will once again chair ArtPetron 7, the nationwide student art competition of oil-industry leader Petron Corp. Popularly acknowledged as the “father of modern Philippine sculpture,” Abueva continues to play a major role in the Philippine world of art. With its theme Alay sa Palatandaang Bayan, ArtPetron 7 celebrates the Filipino’s multi-racial heritage through the landmarks and architecture that stand as testaments to the cultures that touched ours throughout history: Spanish, American, Chinese and Malay. Contest entries should feature landmarks such as lighthouses, bridges, monuments, parks, town halls and other historic places around the country that have existed for over 50 years. Winners in the painting and photography categories will be selected by an elite corps of judges who are either respected artists in their own right or are respected members of the art community: • Felice Sta. Maria of the Unesco and former president of the board of trustees of the Metropolitan Museum in Manila. • Hon. Benedicto Cabrera, national artist for visual arts. •Juvenal Sanso, internationally-renowned printmaker and painter. • Mauro “Malang” Santos, very popular and prolific master painter. •Prof. Roberto Feleo of the Department of Studio Arts, College of Fine Arts, University of the Philippines-Diliman. •Wig Tysmans, master photographer and chair of ArtPetron’s photography category. •George Tapan, one of the country’s famous travel photographers. •Romeo Vitug, respected cinematographer. •Paulo Alcazaren, famous landscape architect and heritage conservationist. • Alexandra Prieto-Romualdez, president and CEO of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. •Edwin Tuyay, renowned photojournalist with covers for Asiaweek, Newsweek, Time, and Reader’s Digest among his credits. •Ed Arcilla, commercial photographer who has won competitions here and abroad.
