Motorcycle-riding soldiers, cops deployed in metropolis
By Gina Elorde 04/11/2010 The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police ( PNP) deployed yesterday hundreds of armed motorcycle-riding soldiers and policemen who will roam around the metropolis as part of the security measures being implemented as the elections draw near. PNP spokesman Chief Supt. Leonardo Espina said the deployment of these armed motorcycle-riding soldiers and policemen was ordered by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to ensure peaceful, honest and orderly elections in Metro Manila. AFP National Capital Region (NCR) Command chief Rear Adm. Feliciano Angue disclosed the police and military will deploy 12 motorcycles each for the additional mobile patrol. Each motorcycle that will be deployed will have at least two uniformed personnel, Espina said. The NCR Police Office will also deploy 12 motorcycles in the metropolis. Each motorcycle team will be accompanied by a police motorcycle team that will patrol around Metro Manila. Espina explained the motorcycle-riding soldiers and policemen will man the street and at the same time handle the case when there are misunderstandings involving candidates and their supporters. The PNP and the AFP are also conducting joint Comelec-imposed checkpoints nationwide.
