Navotas gov’t employs 150 poor but deserving students
03/12/2010 Some 150 poor but deserving students were chosen by the Navotas government to work at the city hall for a month with pay as part of a special program initiated jointly by the local government and the Department of Labor and Employment. According to Mayor Toby Tiangco, the selected students were all city residents who belong to the poor sector. “They will be part of the city government’s special program for the employment of the students (SPES),” said Tiangco who is already on his third and last term as the city’s chief executive. Starting April 5, 2010, the students will work for one whole month and will be assigned to different departments of the city government. “They will work as clerks, encoders, liaison officers, aides and perform other auxiliary jobs,” he said. The students will receive the existing minimum salary wherein the labor department shall provide for 40 percent while the city government shoulders the remaining 60 percent. The mayor said the city government annually appropriates funds for the continuing SPES projects and other related summer youth programs such as Free Sports clinic, Theatrical Workshop and Inter-Barangay Sports Fest. “This program aims to instill in the minds of our young Navoteños the importance and value of hard work and to make use of their vacation constructively. We see to it that only the most needy and qualified will be accepted in the program,” Tiangco said. Genesis Sanoy, Public Employment and Service Office chief, said the beneficiaries were thoroughly screened and evaluated by PESO. “Only the most qualified and deserving students will be accommodated based on the strict policies and procedures required under SPES,” Sanoy said. The SPES program, under an existing law, is intended to help the poor but deserving students pursue their education by means of employment during vacation. Arlie O. Calalo
