Lapus: Spare education sector from politics
02/09/2010 Education Secretary Jesli Lapus on Monday appealed to all candidates to spare the education sector from politics, as graduation rites are fast approaching. Lapus appealed to politicians both national and local to avoid filling up graduation stages and events with campaign materials such as posters, streamers and other campaign paraphernalias, in the guise of congratulatory remarks. “The Department of Education has banned the display of campaign materials on the walls of schools. This ban is also adhering to the order of the Commission on Elections, especially in the schools, which will be used as polling places when election day comes,” Lapus said. Lapus stressed that he has received reports of schools already being bombarded by posters of politicians making early congratulatory marks to the graduating batch of 2010. He said most of them are found in schools in Metro Manila. He noted that this is a clear violation of the rules of the Comelec. Lapus appealed to candidates to respect the schools as an institution and their being a non partisan entity. The poll body earlier asked politicians to do away with putting up campaign materials in public places. “Printed materials and advertisements showing the picture, image or name of a candidate made or done in violation of election laws prior to the campaign period must be removed by Monday, Feb. 8,” the en banc resolution of the Comelec said.
