LTO, Customs bureau urged to implement interconnectivity system

07/04/2009

Importers of brand-new and used vehicles and a technology provider of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) have urged the agency and the Bureau of Customs (BoC) to totally implement the interconnectivity of the two government agencies for more transparent and speedy service to the public.

The group of importers, who requested anonymity, specifically addressed their concern to LTO chief Assistant Secretary Arturo Lomibao and Customs Commissioner Napoleon Morales.

The group cited the existing memorandum of agreement (MoA) signed during the time of former LTO chief and now chairman of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) which calls for the 100 percent implementation of the LTO and BoC’ interconnectivity.

Sources from LTO information technology provider (ITP), however, noted the partial use of the system by the agency but stressed the necessity for the full implementation for better and transparent transactions between the two agencies.

They said the system is already in place and ready for full implementation.

With the transparency in the system, erring personnel of both the LTO and BoC, or even outsiders, could not pull off their nefarious activities once the interconnectivity is fully implemented, thus increase revenues for the national government.                       Mario J. Mallari
