Mayor Lim has say on the next MPD chief — Moreno

03/31/2009

Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno yesterday joined calls made by members of the Manila Police District (MPD) to make sure that Mayor Alfredo Lim would have a say on who will be the next MPD chief.

In a statement, Moreno said it was highly important that the mayor and the chief of police in his area of jurisdiction were in very good terms to ensure the peace and order in the city.

“The mayor should know the next MPD director whom he trusts. How could they work in harmony if no trust exists between them,” he said.

The vice mayor said “the process of giving the mayor a free hand to choose the head of the police district under his jurisdiction is a time-honored tradition and should not be ignored especially in the case of Manila, which is the country’s capital and premier city.”

Moreno said he could not help but suspect that there were unseen hands manipulating the choice of who should be installed as the next MPD director, once Chief Supt. Robert “Boysie” Rosales, MPD director, assumed a higher post.

Reportedly, Rosales will be leaving the MPD next month to head the National Capital Region Office.

In fact, Moreno said, the endorsement made by the members of the Manila’s Finest Brotherhood Association Inc. on who they would like to lead the premier police force should at least be given some consideration.

Moreno said the policemen, just like Mayor Lim, who is a product of the Manila police himself, knew who could best handle the position, with the interest of the city and its residents whose welfare should be protected. PNA
