Push reading, literacy in school — Lim
02/08/2009 Citing the need to enhance reading in the school curriculum, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim yesterday ordered the city’s Department of Education (DepEd) to keep pushing reading and literacy among the kids, especially in the elementary and high school levels. This after the mayor met last Monday with officials of MV Doulos, the world’s only floating library, led by Felipe Boechat. Boechat called on Lim along with project coordinator Trizenia September and Filipino representative Eric Guillermo. Boechat said the MV Doulos is bringing in new books and its crew will be conducting once again outreach missions to poor communities in Tondo, particularly in Baseco and Parola. Doulos’ project seeks to address the growing need to enhance the educational system so that students can cope with modern technology while enriching their reading comprehension skills. In a statement, Lim said children who can read well are able to grow up as skilled professionals and responsible citizens in the future. The mayor expressed full support to the efforts of the MV Doulos which is arriving next month to bring in once more its compliment of more than 500,000 books for the public to see. PNA Back to top
