Moreno calls on school execs to beef up security
10/23/2007 Acting Manila Mayor Isko Moreno yesterday urged school officials to beef up their security within and outside their respective school complexes. Moreno also called on school officials to conduct drills and seminars on what students should do in case of emergencies such as bombings, earthquakes, among others. He said security guards manning school premises should also be equipped with sufficient knowledge on how bombs or their components actually look like to enable them to know with certainty when they see one. The acting mayor also enjoined students to do their share by cooperating with rigid security checks with utmost patience and being wary of their surroundings. Students, he said, should immediately report to school authorities or those in charge of security should they notice anything unusual or the presence of suspicious persons especially within the campus premises. Moreno tasked division of city schools superintendent Dr. Eloisa Quinones to immediately effect stepped-up security measures in all of the city’s public elementary and high schools. He also appealed to those operating private schools to follow suit. “Children, most especially, need to know what to do in cases of emergency and chaotic situations,” Moreno stressed. These seminars and drills, he pointed out, should be done on a regular basis and not only as an offshoot of incidents such as the recent bombing at the Glorietta 2 in Makati City. Allan A.
