Pacman in 3D
By Deni Rose M. Afinidad 09/02/2010 In the 1980s, together with the video game Pac-Man, Sony’s Walkman became an icon of the decade. Fast-forward to today: Sony is introducing another cultural phenomenon — the 3D home entertainment system — together with Pacman, not the video game, but the boxing legend Manny Pacquiao. “To share our passion of bringing complete 3D experience closer to the Filipino audience, Sony, the biggest name in entertainment, teams up with Manny, the biggest name in boxing,” says Sony Philippines’ president and managing director, Takao Kuroda. “Pacquiao is a man whose personal achievements have given his countrymen a shared experience of national glory. Being a true symbol of power and triumph make him the perfect ambassador in our campaign to bring the sensational experience of the Sony 3D world to the Philippines.” According to the “people’s champ,” endorsing the brand and its new products is a great honor that makes him proud. “I’m very happy that Sony Philippines is investing in bringing their most advanced 3D products to the country,” said Manny, the first boxer in sports history to win nine world titles in seven different weight divisions. “I am also happy that they trust me to help Filipinos appreciate 3D technology.” As the brand’s ambassador, the first-time sports columnist and Sarangani representative will appear in TV commercials and other ad campaigns for the brand’s wide range of products, including a 3D Blu-ray player loaded with movies and a 52-inch 3D Bravia TV with glasses, which Manny already owns, making him the first Filipino to own a 3D TV. “We are the first and so far, the only, company to provide a complete 3D entertainment technology in both software and hardware — from TV to video players to PlayStations,” said Kuroda. After introducing the 3D TV last February, Sony Philippines launched NEX-5 last July. NEX-5 is a camera that can capture photos in 3D sweep panorama shots. Through Sony’s mall tours, Filipinos were also able to see this year’s FIFA World Cup finals in 3D. Next, Sony is working on showing Pacquiao’s next fight in 3D. “The 3D TV will be a big help in my next fight,” Pacman said in Filipino. “Seeing my matches on a 3D TV will not cause pain in the eyes (unlike in regular TVs). It’s as good as watching the action live. The players are like coming out of the TV,” enthused the father of four by wife Jinkee. Indeed, Pacquiao has gone far, from school dropout and street urchin to “the best fighter of the decade,” a title conferred by the Boxing Writers Association of America. In his journey to glory, he has likewise transitioned from Walkman to 3D. “Because I love music, the first Sony product I had was a Walkman I used to carry everywhere I go,” he shared. “I also had a Betamax (player), the one that plays VHS,” he said in a jest. “Like Sony 3D, Manny also used to be a dreamer,” declared Kuroda. “Both Sony and Manny have proven that anything you can imagine, you can make real.”
