Cultural diversity and dialog take center stage In one special evening, re-discover your heritage and experience the harmonies that can be made amidst rich diversity. Cartwheel Foundation Inc. and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) present “Reconnecting with our Roots: A Cultural Exchange,” a musical concert celebrating cultural dialogue that knows no barriers, slated on June 21, 6 p.m. at the CCP’s Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater). An exhibit will also be opened for viewing before the show at 3 p.m. Together, Filipino indigenous tribes, American classical musicians and young musicians from Metro Manila will create the melody of self-determination, cultural dialog and peace. For one night, be part of the continuing story of revisiting roots and bridging cultures with performances by the Tala-Andig Tribe of Miarayon, Bukidnon, the Umajam Tribe of Cabanglasan, Bukidnon, the Ichananaw Tribe of Tinglayan, Kalinga, Cultures in Harmony, St. Scholastica’s College School of Music and Philippine Research for Developing Instrumental Soloists. Patintero Yabang Pinoy, an organization of passionate believers and supporters of all things Filipino, stages a tournament of one of the nation’s most beloved street sport. In celebration of the country’s Independence Day, it organizes the longest rally of patintero enthusiasts, the “Todo Gulo, Todo Bilis, Todo Saya, Todo Pawis, Todo Talon, Todo Bilis, Todo SAYA–Pinakamahabang Todo Patintero.” The fun event is on June 21 (Sunday), from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Yabang Pinoy’s “Pinakamahabang Todo Patintero” event assembles all the members and advocates of the organization, for them to meet other shouting proud Filipinos and be part of a single powerful collective. To compete, participants must form teams of six to eight members; there are no restrictions, so anyone can join. Yabang Pinoy also introduces new rules to the game, including terms like patotot, empoy, and back touch. With hope, according to Yabang Pinoy, this will start the resurgence of realizing the fun in being Filipino. The Third Manila Food and Beverage Expo The Manila Food and Beverage Expo (Mafbex) 2009, the biggest and most comprehensive food and beverage show in the country, will serve as the venue for the first time for the Asean Bartending Championship. The event will gather young skilled professional bartenders of the Asean region to further promote and improve the bartending standards in the hotel and restaurant industry. Mafbex 2009 is slated to be held at the World Trade Center Manila from June 17 to 21. Watch students from the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde prove they have learned a thing or two about food and drinks as they compete for various categories. Hanoi-based celebrity chef and World Café Asia host Bobby Chinn takes Filipinos on a gastronomic journey at the International Food City, found at the 3rd Manila Food and Beverage Expo.
