Frederick Peralta’s forecast on kids fashion
02/08/2009 This year, design maverick Frederick Peralta says that fashion will be kinder, less concentrated on frivolous elements but more conscious of the subtle details. Wearability and the freedom to express one’s individuality, he adds, will provide the major inspirations in the newfangled designs. Surprisingly, says this innovator, fashion for kids will be in the forefront of heralding this new consciousness. “Fashion for kids will mirror this new style because fashion will go back to the essential elements of dressing up, such as comfort and convenience. Kids will dress up like kids again and not as bizarre copycats of adults,” Peralta points out. As a designer who creates haute couture for children, Peralta says it is imperative to let children look their best without putting them in constricting styles that are better suited for adults. For kids, as well as for adults, Peralta issues the following forecast: 1. “Violet shades in combination with black and other bright colors will be the dominant palette for girls’ wear this year. Women will see the need to return to femininity after years of asserting herself in a largely male-dominated society. Plus, the gamut of violet shades — from subtle lilac to bright purple — expresses opulence and daintiness.” 2. “For boys, I see the comeback of bright pastel shades which are fun and playful. These colors signify light-heartedness, leisure and play. These vibrant shades for boys and girls perk up the rather gloomy predictions of many political and business analysts.” 3. “Although we’re used to seeing frilly fashion for young girls, this year is going to be all about simplicity in design with a lot of subtle detailing, such as smocking, pleats and the like. Interesting fabric cuts will also be at play.” 4. “For boys, the basic jeans will still be in fashion but this time with smart treatments like prints and embroidery. Plaid polos and tops with playful appliques, prints and patchwork will also be a major components in boy’s wear.” One fashion label for children, which Peralta acclaims for combining silhouettes with trendy details, is Periwinkle. “Periwinkle is able to incorporate treatments that are very modern with classic silhouettes. So the look is elegant but very wearable — which is the new style for kids,” Peralta notes. Periwinkle’s fashion for girls mirrors just that — clothes that evoke elegance and femininity without being frivolous. The newest collection features mixes of pink and lilac with brown details. Chocolate and white also make an arresting combination in pared-down party frock. Periwinkle’s now-famous smocking and delicate floral embroidery — all done by hand — adorn many of the dresses in the collection. Other details include neat contrasting piping, small bows on the bodice, dainty ruffles that run the side of play wear, tiny floral prints in washed tones and peplum skirts. For boys, the line issues nifty polo shirts in plaids and stripes of blue and sunset palettes. Sports shirts come in playful pastel shades with cutout numeral appliques, and accent patchwork at the back. Complementing this fun style are denim utility shorts, drawstring pants and cotton slacks in comfortable cuts. “Periwinkle is absolutely investment dressing for children. Its heritage of durability, elegant styling and handmade details make it worth buying and keeping, and passing on to the next generation of children,” Peralta adds. Periwinkle boutiques can be found at Shangri-La Mall, SM Mall of Aisa, SM Megamall, The Block at SM North Edsa, Trinoma, Robinsons Galleria, Robinsons Place Erimta, Alabang Town Center, Eastwood Mall, SM Pampanga, SM Clark and SM Cebu.
