Winning images emerge from Sony Ericsson phones

06/18/2007

Images taken with a variety of Sony Ericsson phones were among the top winners of Windows Into Asia, a joint promotional campaign of the National Geographic Channel (NGC) and Sony Ericsson. Windows Into Asia brought photography enthusiasts from the Philippines, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Singapore and Thailand. National Geographic has always been known for its excellence in photography. The campaign with Sony Ericsson tells how one can see and appreciate the different facets of Asian life and culture with their camera phones.

The online mobile phone photography contest elicited over 3,200 entries and was judged by a panel of experts including NGC creative director Quentin Tang and renowned National Geographic adventure photographer Matthieu Paley.

The grand prize winning entry, entitled “Red City,” showcases a nation colored in red because of the red lanterns, flowers and decorations during Chinese New Year in Singapore, symbolizing happiness and prosperity. The entry was captured by the winner on his K800i Cyber-shot phone, which features a 3.2-megapixel camera with auto-focus, xenon flash and image stabilizer. Sony Ericsson’s unique BestPic technology debuts in this pioneering model in the Cyber-shot line of phones. The feature lets one capture the precise moment you want—four images as you press the button and another four images afterwards for a total of nine images to choose from. The K800i was also declared this year’s Best 3GSM Handset at the GSM Association Global Mobile Awards in Barcelona. The accolade was bestowed on the phone for its excellence in quality image capture and fast and easy share and transfer of those images.

The Sony Ericsson K750i camera phone, awarded Best Mobile Imaging Device by the Technical Image Press Association, had the most number of entries with 579 images. Colorful and beautiful winning shots from the Philippines, India, Thailand and Singapore were taken with its 2.0-megapixel camera with auto focus. The Sony Ericsson K700i, the fashionable still and video imaging phone, also emerged as one of the most-used phone models in the contest.

Superb picture quality was captured by other phone models in the Sony Ericsson K-series of camera phones. “Waiting in the City”, a photo of a woman taken in the Forbidden City in China, submitted by Jerome Trinona of the Philippines using the Sony Ericsson K610i and emerged as one of the winners from the Philippines. This slim 3G phone model offers a 2.0-megapixel camera and video recording.

More than 5,000 dancers swaying in Bali’s Kecak dance are depicted in a winning photo by Made Nagi, taken with the Sony Ericsson K300i camera phone. Salman Khalid took the dazzling “Karachi at Night” with his Sony Ericsson K310i camera phone.

Although other brands were also represented among the winning images, the contest showcased the versatility and mobile imaging superiority of Sony Ericsson camera phones.

Winners from each of the seven participating countries won a Sony Ericsson K800i Cyber-shot phone. The grand prize winner, chosen from among the seven winners from each country, and his partner, will join an exciting National Geographic expedition in Mongolia in July.
