Actor-director Ricky Davao returns to doing what he prefers to do.
“I”m an old soul,” reveals Davao at the recent press conference of his newest afternoon directorial job, Forever. A few months since his last show aired, the remake of the Korean hit series Coffee Prince ended after its seven-week run in November last year, Davao helms the lens for the return of the Heart Evangelista and Geoff Eigenman love team.
“Mahilig ako sa luma. Mahilig ako sa history,” adds the actor-director. “Malaking bagay ang gumawa ng period (show).”
The director admits reading on the works of legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa to educate himself. Davao informs that he’s a “self-studied” director who has yet to take a film education course.
His latest GMA 7 afternoon show, after directing Sisid and Kokak in the past, Forever is slated to premiere on Jan. 21 in the station’s Afternoon Prime block.
Looking at the trailer, Forever is reminiscent of the themes of undying love that defies the passage of time as tackled by One True Love, a film produced by GMA 7, and probably the most identifiable film similar to Somewhere In Time, a film starring Christopher Reeve.
Evangelista and Eigenmann, who first teamed up in Hiram when they were both with rival station ABS-CBN, play the star-crossed lovers who will defy her rich sugar plantation family, even trying to continue their tragic love story five decades past through the present time with the help of an antique pocket watch.
Joining the cast is veteran actress Gloria Romero as the modern-day Adora, a role both she and Evangelista are going to play. Also in the cast are Isabel Oli, Saab Magalona, Gian Magdangal and Candy Pangilinan. Special guests include Marc Abaya and Ronnie Henares.
Though Davao has been busy with TV directorial assignments, he is quick to say that he still is very much doing what he is more popularly known as.
Among his recent acting stint was a cameo appearance in Coffee Prince. He is working in other films such as Gabriela Silang, an upcoming film about the famed historical figure to be directed by former actor Carlo Maceda.
