BIRDWATCHING, LEARNING LESSONS AND TRIPS

Haribon lines up 2012 Q1 activities

02/12/2012

Haribon Foundation invites members and nature enthusiasts to join them as they prepared a lineup of activities for 2012 that will surely captivate your hearts, giving you a privilege to see how nature works through bird-watching activities, nature trips and learning forums.

While everyone, both young and old, are getting head over heels with the characters of the recently popular computer game Angry Birds, Haribon Foundation is giving people a chance to see for themselves actual living, breathing birds that are both stranger and family to the country. Haribon conducts birdwatching activities for existing and prospective members every 3rd Saturday of the month.

On February 18, Haribon birdwatchers get the chance to visit Candaba Swamp in Pampanga, an important migratory watering hole for migratory and resident birds and one of the country’s important biodiversity areas. At this time of the month, many migratory birds and fowls like great egrets, moorhens and mallards come from as far as the Siberian region in Russia, China and Japan to escape the winter chill and roost, eat and breed at Candaba’s inviting waters. Bring your family members and let the children experience the breath-taking sight of these birds. It is also a perfect Valentine’s date with that special someone who may want to know the romantic life of these creatures.

There are already scheduled bird trips for next month that members may want to take part of – March 3 in Angat Dam and March 17 at Jalajala in Rizal. In the coming months, target bird-watching points include Mt. Palay-palay in Cavite; Bangkang Kahoy in Dolores, Quezon; Silang, Cavite (for kids); Subic; Mt. Makiling in Los Baños, and Dumaguete. Other target sites in the offering include Palaui, Calaguas, Nueva Ecija, Bukidnon, Olango and Mt. Kitanglad.

Learn a thing or two about how nature works and how we could protect the environment. Haribon Learning Lessons are set every 4th Saturday of the month, with the first of the modules starting this February 25. If you would like to increase your knowledge, improve on your facilitating skills, or need refresher course on any of the topics. Complete five modules and become a legible Haribon resource person and get to share what you have learned and raise awareness on the state of our forests and the urgent need to protect them.

Learning Sessions are free for members at Kibid (P500) level and above and are recommended if you are at least college age. The first Learning Sessions will again be on Biodiversity Conservation. Check our website to see the lineup of modules set for this year.

General Nakar in Quezon Province is a Haribon project site in the Sierra Madre Forests and is part of the Golden Forests Initiative. We hope that you will join us in this nature adventure slated for March 9 to 11 that includes a community tour and interaction, trekking, bird watching, mangrove river cruise, a visit to a lambanog processing site and much more. We will keep you updated on details.
