Toshiba shows its continuing commitment to Filipino youth
04/18/2010 In its continued commitment to the development of today’s Filipino youth, world leader and innovator in pioneering high technology Toshiba Corp. donated 100 brand new PC notebooks and one-year full Internet connectivity to 10 public high schools in Laguna province as part of the company’s support to the recent “Gearing up Internet Literacy and Access for Students” (GILAS) Project. GILAS, a multi-sector consortium, aims to provide Internet access to all public secondary school students in the countryside. The project’s nationwide campaign has the goal of promoting information literacy by bringing all public high schools in the Philippines on-line and into the network. According to Dr. Ichiro Tai, Director and Corporate Senior Executive Vice President, Toshiba seeks to contribute to the society by supporting programs that promote social welfare and community development. “As guided by a corporate philosophy rooted in the concept of ‘Committed to People, Committed to the Future,’ the company is pleased to support the goals and achievements of the GILAS Project, as it is a powerful vehicle for supporting economic and social development and helping to improve the material well-being of the Philippine youth by opening up the world of information technology.” Present during the turnover were Fernando Zobel de Ayala (president, Ayala Corp. and co-vice chairman, Ayala Foundation Inc.), Guillermo Luz (executive vice president of Ayala Foundation Inc.), Mario Deriquito (director of Center for Social Development of Ayala Foundation Inc. and GILAS), lawyer Lilia de Lima (director general of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority), Dr. Paraluman Giron (regional director, Department of Education-IV-A), Dr. Ester Lozada (Schools Division superintendent, DepEd-Laguna), Mari Paul Soriano (executive director, Adopt A School Program, DepEd), Tai, Shoji Yoshioka (corporate vice president, Toshiba Corp. and managing director of Toshiba Asia Pacific PTE Ltd., Singapore), Naoaki Okuzumi (general manager, Innovation Promotion Division, Toshiba Corp.), Ikuo Sako (senior quality expert, Innovation Research Division, Toshiba Corp.), Yoshiyuki Yano (president and director of Toshiba Information Equipment Philippines Inc.) and Isao Morita (president and director of Toshiba Storage Device Philippines Inc.).
