11/15/2009

A total number of 1,150 delegates from 23 countries in the Asia-Pacific region comprising Rotary International (RI) Zones 6B, 7A and 10B have already registered for the Rotary Institute Manila 2009 taking place Nov. 27-29 at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati, Guiller Tumangan, chairman of the biggest Rotary International event in the region, said.

Of this number, over 550 Rotarians will come from across the seas while about 600 Rotary leaders will come from the 10 RI districts in the Philippines. The delegates will be composed of district governors, incoming governors and Rotary senior leaders and their spouses and the countries they represent.

Aside from the Philippines, also included are Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Scotland, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

This year’s Institute, according to Tumangan, will primarily discuss how the Rotary can further enhance their humanitarian assistance and mitigate the people’s current living situations. Activities include seminars on significant issues of the Institute, governors-elect training seminars, governors-nominee training seminars, district trainers training seminars, plenary sessions and group discussions, as well as various spouse activities.

Aside from the seminars and workshops, various activities have been arranged for the spouses by the Spouse Committee headed by Chairman Tessie Tumangan. These include a visit to Malacañang, a cultural tour of the Intramuros Walled City, as well as a luncheon and fashion show. The show will be held at the Ballroom of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Makati on Nov. 28 and will feature the dean of Philippine fashion, Ben Farrales, and his iconic designs worn by former Miss Philippines and Miss International beauties.

The Philippine government, through the Department of Tourism, Pagcor and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, has provided support to the hosting of the event which will help spur tourism and boost the country’s economy. Many individuals and companies from the private sector, especially Rotary members and their respective clubs, have also lent their assistance either through advertisements in the souvenir programs and newspaper supplements or financial contributions or donation in kind or services in the true Rotary spirit of voluntarism.
