National Historical Institute marks its 75th year
10/19/2008 A two-day celebration will highlight the 75th founding anniversary of the National Historical Institute (NHI) to be held at the 4th Floor of the NHI Bldg., T.M. Kalaw Avenue, Ermita, Manila. As a way of expressing its gratitude, a thanksgiving for the institute’s stakeholders — historians, descendants of heroes, civic organizations, historical associations and other cultural agencies — will be held on Oct. 21. The culminating activity will be the grand reunion and fellowship among retired and present officials and employees of the NHI set on Oct. 24. Former NHI chairmen and directors who generously shared their knowledge and expertise for the promotion and preservation of Philippine History will grace the occasion. The NHI was established in 1972 by virtue of the Integrated Reorganization Plan of the government. But since the early part of the 1930s the Philippine government created a number of committees tasked to preserve and mark antiquities, commemorate historical events and other cultural works. The need to streamline the diverse functions of these agencies led to the absorption by, and creation of, the NHI under Presidential Decree 1, Sept. 24, 1972. Under the leadership of chairman Ambeth Ocampo, executive director Ludovico Badoy and deputy executive director Emelita Almosara, the institute continues to perform its mandate, to undertake research and publication of Philippine historical works; administer educational activities on historical events and personages; restore, preserve and conserve movable and immovable objects of historical value and oversee the implementation of the National Historic Act of the Philippines (Presidential Decree 260 and PD 1505) and of the Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines, otherwise known as Republic Act 8491. Among its major undertakings aimed at strengthening its mandates and functions include redefining certain policies on historic preservation, outreach programs to local historical committees, fast-tracking the markings of historical sites and structures, optimization of the ICTs in promoting Philippine History and Filipino historical heritage, among others.
