GSKFI steps up preventive healthcare drive in Metro Manila
06/10/2007 GlaxoSmithKline Foundation (Phils.), Inc. (GSKFI) has strengthened its advocacy campaign on preventive healthcare among indigent members of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) by producing and providing a set of health education materials to the various city and municipal health centers in Metro Manila. Under the foundation’s Pinoy Health Pass — Family Health and Wellness program, the health education materials include full-color leaflets, flyers and posters on lifestyle modification, de-worming and diarrhea, heart disease and hypertension, smoking cessation and lung cancer, pneumonia and acute respiratory infection, tuberculosis, prostate cancer, breast cancer and cervical cancer. The materials were presented by the Department of Health (DoH) Director for National Capital Region Dr. Asuncion Anden, PhilHealth vice president for NCR group Rodolfo Balog and GSKFI projects officer Dennis Tuazon in a simple ceremony held at The Heritage Hotel Manila. On hand to witness the event were Metro Manila’s city and municipal health officers. “This latest endeavor of GlaxoSmithKline Foundation is aligned with our Family Health and Wellness program which aims to educate indigent Filipinos on the importance of preventive healthcare and increase the utilization of out-patient primary care benefit package available at health centers in Metro Manila,” Tuazon said. The package includes free primary consultation with a physician and free laboratory examinations for complete blood count, chest X-ray, stool exam, urinalysis and sputum microscopy for tuberculosis suspects and screening for cancer. More than 15,000 indigent families are currently enrolled in GSKFI’s Family Health and Wellness program in 24 pilot sites in Navotas, Manila, Quezon City, Rizal, Tacloban City, Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley and Surigao del Norte. With the expansion of coverage to Metro Manila, GSKFI’s program now covers about 350,000 indigent members.
