It is insulting for foreigners — and foreign journalists -- to call Filipinos a “nation of servants.”

But it must also be asked: Hasn’t the Arroyo government succeeded in creating the world-wide perception that we are indeed a nation of servants?

There is hardly any doubt that Gloria Arroyo, in the past eight years in Malacañang has actively encouraged Filipinos to seek work abroad as domestics, and even certified Filipino teachers are encouraged to work abroad, knowing that they end up as househelpers abroad; doctors turn to nursing to be able to land a nursing job abroad and all this encouragement despite the fact that the country faces a huge problem in the lack of health workers and the continuing brain drain.

This Gloria encouragement continues to this day, despite the fact that too many of our Filipino women end up as prostitutes and housemaids who are constantly abused by their employers.

There was even a time when Gloria publicly called on the Filipinos to seek jobs abroad to bring in the dollars, and called on the Filipinos abroad not to come home as yet, as they are needed to bring in the dollars, which keep the economy afloat.

With millions of Filipinos working abroad as servants, what other image can the world have of Filipinos?

But what is stupid about that article written by Hong Kong journalist Chip Tsao was that in picturing Filipinos as a nation of servants, Tsao used as an argument that Filipinos, being a nation of servants, are not worthy to claim the Spratlys from China.

Tsao, in that article, while insulting Filipinos, merely showed the journalist’s complete lack of intelligence which makes Tsao fall under the category of morons.

Since Tsao claims that a “nation of servants” is not worthy to claim the Spratlys, then obviously, China, which says it has a historical claim of Spratlys is neither worthy to claim it, since it used to be a very poor country and its people, known as “amahs” were once the household help of Filipinos. If Tsao, however, insinuates that only rich countries, which China has become, can lay claim to the Spratlys, is that moronic Chinese journalist now saying that, the Philippines, then an economic power in Asia, second only to Japan, had the right to claim the Spratlys, but no longer has that right since the Philippines has become a “nation of servants?” The idiocy of that argument from Tsao is appalling.

Australia was once a nation of convicts, since the British sent all their prisoners to that place. It is now a country. Did Australians — white British convicts and Aborigines — have no right to claim Australia as their own?

And those African states, ruled then by the white minority and from whence originated the captured free Africans to become slaves had no right to claim their country as their own simply because they were not only poor countries but a nation of slaves with no rights?

And what about Black America in the Sixties — and even earlier, for that matter, as they were slaves of the white man — where they could not even sit in the front of a bus, as these seats were reserved for the whites, and where the blacks, called Negroes then, were barred from eating in the same restaurants reserved for whites and a time where they could not even be freed from slavery until the white man who owned them gave them their free status. Is Tsao saying that these blacks, a nation of slaves in America, had no right to demand for their rights as human beings, and their civil rights, and claim too, America as their own simply because the blacks were looked down upon by white America as being beneath them and as slaves for them to claim America and their rights as their own?

Today America has a black President in Barack Obama who can claim to speak for the American people. Following Tsao’s moronic argument, with him having come from a country of slaves, he then had no right to seek the presidency of the land since he comes from a family of black slaves?

Spratlys was recognized by the Philippine government for too many decades as its own. China said nothing about owning Spratlys then, which group of islands was discovered by a Filipino. Now that China is both an economic and military power in Asia, Spratlys belongs to China? Might makes right for Tsao? Only an economic and military power can claim Spratlys?

But why bother to argue with a moron like Tsao?

A moron is a moron is a moron. And Tsao certainly is a big moron.
