Germany to share insights on survival of small firms
02/12/2009 Germany will assist the Philippines in charting strategies for service market development focusing on how to make small and medium enterprise become competitive amid the current global economic environment. The conference will be conducted by the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Feb. 12, 2009 at the Renaissance Hotel. International economic expert Jörg Meyer-Stamer of the Mesopartner, a German consulting firm, will present the current thoughts, experiences, trends and strategies in developing market for services directed toward making small and medium enterprises (SMEs) competitive. Top ranking officials from the DTI, the GTZ Private Sector Promotion (SMEDSEP) and other programs, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and the National Competitiveness Council will also be present during the workshop. Among the issues that may be taken up during the one day meeting cum strategic workshop is on how to improve on the reportedly low performance of the Philippines, relative to other countries included in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) study, as far as the ratio of businesses providing services to other businesses is concerned. As it stands, it appears that certain frame conditions here are not giving incentive for private service providers to thrive and grow to support SMEs’ requirements for competitiveness. The SMEDSEP, a development cooperation project between the Republic of the Philippines and the Federal Republic of Germany, aims to improve the business and investment climate for SME in the Philippines especially in the Visayas. SMEDSEP contributes to the efforts of the Philippine government to improve the framework conditions for private sector development in the country. SMEDSEP is implemented in partnership with the DTI at national, regional and provincial levels and the GTZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). GTZ is an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations owned by the German government. For 30 years, it has been providing forward looking contributions to political, economic, ecological and social development in partner countries. GTZ supports reform and change processes in an increasingly globalized world, often working under difficult conditions. GTZ major approach to facilitate change is promoting capacity development of people and partner organizations as well as improving institutions and frame conditions in partner countries.
