Gov’t urged to strengthen research for trade policies

08/06/2008

Various academic institutions in the country have urged the government and private sector to focus more on research and analyses that will provide credible data and inputs to strengthen trade policy formulation and international trade development.

The call came at the recently concluded conference on the Institutionalization of Multi-stakeholder Consultation Program on Trade Policy and Negotiations in Makati where stakeholders from the government, private sector and the academe shared their views and opinions on the current trade consultation process and what can be done to improve the system.

Organized by the Universal Access to Competitiveness and Trade and the Philippines Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the support of British government, the conference opened an avenue to participants to raise their concerns as well as air their interest of getting highly involved in the conduct of trade negotiations.

Dr. Ponciano Intal Jr., executive director of the Angelo King Institute and Professor at the De La Salle University, said there is a need for the private sector and even the government to invest more in analysis and consensus building for improved economic governance and trade policy development.
